Good-bye 2021 and Hello 2022!

The fall 2021 semester was a good one. The ESL Department was blessed with the addition of Shaila Perez as the ESL paraprofessional. She has been busy communicating with parents, helping ESL students, and translating documents.

The Middle School and High School ESL students attended weekly Language Enrichment classes. English Language Learners studied the Arkansas Driver's Study Guide and lots of Idiomatic Expressions. The Quizlet Match and Kahoot games were VERY competitive. The following students earned impressive scores!

As part of a coordinated response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Division of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) in partnership with the Office for Education Policy (OEP) at the University of Arkansas has developed a Parent/Guardian Survey for soliciting family input on what is working now and what may be considered for the future.

The survey seeks to involve families in an organized, ongoing and timely way in planning, review, and improvement. The survey will provide feedback regarding:

*   family concerns
*   how families are making decisions
*   family awareness of options and resources available
*   family considerations for the future

The intention of this survey is not to identify individual school or district responses, but rather to establish an understanding of the state as a whole. The information will be aggregated by region only; therefore, families will be asked to identify the region of the state in which they live in order to understand the distribution of the survey without specifically identifying any district or school by name.

OEP will be sharing results at the December State Board meeting.

Eureka Springs High School Transitioning Back to School for the 20-21 School Year

On behalf of the Eureka Springs High School, I would like to welcome you back to school for the 20-21 school year. School will start for students in 9th and 11th grade on August 24th, and students in grades 10 and 12 will begin on the 25th. All students will attend starting on August 26th. Let’s get started on how to proceed for this school year with the options available to our students. First, parents are asked to enroll their student in one of the two options presented this year which is either the virtual or on-site option. Here’s a quick synopsis of what these options will look like and what to expect when picking either option.

The first option is the blended on-site option. This is more like your typical brick and mortar option that you are accustomed to. Students will attend all five days in class. It will of course have to be done a little differently and more regimented than usual for student safety. All staff and students will be screened daily entering the building. The second option is a virtual option where students can log in daily and follow along with their regularly scheduled class. This will look very different than what students may have seen during the final quarter of last year when we were closed down for on-site instruction. Students, if you pick the virtual option, be prepared to log in daily and follow along, participate in daily classes by asking questions and contributing to the lesson, and turn in assignments as scheduled.

Attendance will be determined based on your daily attendance either virtually, or physically in the classroom for instruction. Some students have had the misconception that you could work a job during the day, and do classwork in the evening. It simply will not work like that so that we can maximize the amount of time teachers are able to instruct you and answer questions during their available hours. If you pick the virtual option make sure you are highly motivated and willing to follow these guidelines. Also note that if you pick the virtual option you will be allowed to participate in extracurricular classes on campus such as band, athletics, or choir.

The two options will be very similar in the work completed and lessons that are taught daily.
